Wines of the Month

Domaine Leflaive has been developing for many years long-term partnerships with some vinegrowers that share their passion for the requirement of meticulous work in the vineyard without contribution other than natural supplements. These wines are issued from the Côte de Beaune and notably Auxey-Duresses and Puligny-Montrachet and the Côte Chalonnaise (Rully 1er cru). They are vinified by the Domaine Leflaive’s team, in separate cellars in Puligny-Montrachet. In order to distinguish them from the historical part of the domaine, they are given their own identity under the name “Leflaive & Associés”.

Beautifully textured, opulent and supple, this dances on the palate – incredibly fresh and perfumed with rose and violet vying with hints of mocha, dark chocolate and dried fruits – tannins well integrated and ripe.

Romania is emerging as an exciting destination for characterful Pinot Noir. The supple Sanziana has layers of juicy black cherry and raspberry, with pretty flavours of fruit cake.  A 90+ rated wine for under a tenner? Phenomenally good value!

This is a fresh aromatic mineral and fruity Pouilly Fumé, which is elegant, has plenty of length and a full body. As with most whites from the region, this matches well with smoked salmon, sushi and most seafood.

Soft-shelled Mosel loveliness and clipped lemony precision, opening onto ample apricot fruit. This will mellow and meld with age but frankly, why wait when it’s this good now?

This vibrant, aromatic wine comes from the Awatere Valley, south of the better-known Wairau Plains. Michiel Eradus, owner/winemaker, believes the prolonged ripening period here is key to the wines’ flavour intensity. Eradus Sauvignon Blanc is herbaceous and mineral-driven with a long, rich finish.

Another wonderful creation by Michiel Eradus. His skill in the vineyard and with blending is undoubted and he has created some amazing value wines. This particular Riesling, named after his dog, is just delicious…refreshing, served very chilled, it is perfect with seafood, spicy food or simply as an aperitif.
