Mourvèdre
Mourvèdre is a common blending partner of Syrah and Grenache. In Spain it is known as Monastrell and in Australia and California it can also appear under the name Mataro. Mourvèdre’s heartland in France is in Southern France – particularly in Bandol, where it reigns supreme in the red blends and yields a savoury, gamey, herby quality to the wines. It also commonly features in Southern Rhône, Languedoc & Roussillon blends. This thick-skinned varietal needs a warm climate to ripen fully.
